Mine Bulkhead Design and Construction Inspection
Golinsky Mine, Shasta Lake, California
|
VESTRA staff reviewed and updated historical design plans and specifications for the Golinsky Mine bulkhead seals. The Golinsky Mine is an abandoned copper mine that has discharged acid rock drainage (ARD) into Little Backbone Creek, a tributary to Shasta Lake. Because the mine is located in inaccessible terrain in northern Shasta County, the project design was complicated by the need to use construction technology that could be transported by helicopter. Technical engineering studies were conducted to determine adequacy of the plan and implementation of the bulkhead seals themselves. VESTRA revised the seal design, prepared the contract bid documents, and provided assistance to the US Forest Service during contractor selection, then served as resident inspector for the construction activities for two bulkhead seals at the Golinsky Mine. Air cranes were used to mobilize and demobilize all equipment and supplies required to complete the project. |
