Streambank Stabilization, Project Design, and Permitting
Shaw Ranch, Modoc County, California
|
VESTRA acquired permits for the streambank restoration project located along the mainstem Pit River near the community of Lookout in southwestern Modoc County. The project area was identified by the Pit Resource Conservation District (RCD) as a priority project because of the degraded condition for channel morphology (incised channels), aquatic habitat, water quality/quantity, and riparian habitat. The project included stabilization of about 1,300 feet of streambank and restoration of vertically eroded banks by applying proper remediation treatments. These treatments included installation of rock vane stability devices, planting of vegetation to minimize erosion and promote bank stability, and installation of fencing for livestock grazing exclusion. Rresults of the project have provided an ideal large-scale demonstration site for educational and outreach purposes for the Pit RCD and has served as an example of partnership between the Pit RCD and private landowners that resulted in a solution to a common watershed problem. |
