Vegetation Mapping and Inventory, California
|
VESTRA designed and implemented comprehensive forest vegetation mapping and forest resource inventory systems for Louisiana-Pacific's (LP) 450,000 acres of California timberland. These lands spanned both northern Sierra and coastal forest types and included lands in Plumas, Butte, Tehama, Siskiyou, Mendocino, and Humboldt counties. The project was unique in that detailed forest vegetation classification from Landsat satellite imagery was followed up with a robust field forest inventory effort providing an opportunity to compare results of the classification with ground measurements. A great deal of photointerpretation work was done in the course of the project to identify training sites that were representative of vegetation strata types and to review and analyze satellite image classification results. This inventory project was the basis for LP's sustained yield and ecosystem management planning efforts that followed.
