VESTRA sells a selection of maps of American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). Our maps are created from the official boundary
information published in the US Congressional Record as approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau
(see http://www.ttb.gov/).
VESTRA can also create customized maps to your specifications that highlight the unique characteristics of your vineyard.
We can also produce custom maps of any area in the world given appropriate geographic information. Please contact us for
an estimate of your custom mapping needs.
What are American Viticultural Areas?
AVAs, also called "appellations," are similar to appellations in France, Germany, and Italy. Unlike European appellations, however, those in the United States are not regulated for quality. Rather, an AVA designation on a bottle of wine verifies only that the wine has been grown in a specific geographic location. For example, a particular cabernet sauvignon was grown in the Stags Leap AVA or a chardonnay grape was grown in the Los Carneros AVA. Wineries may display approved AVA names on a wine label if at least 85 percentof the grapes used to make the wine were grown within the indicated AVA. There is no restriction on use of geographic names that are not officially recognized AVA names, such as “Napa County".
