Williams Ranch Tailwater Pond Demonstration Project
Western Shasta Resource Conservation District 2005-2009
Shasta County, California

VESTRA completed the entire survey, design, and permitting package for this irrigation runoff retention pond in central Shasta County, California. This project, sponsored by the Western Shasta Resource Conservation District and funded by the State of California, has goals of improving a number of water quality parameters of flood irrigation runoff from grazed fields. These include improvement in summertime water temperature, turbidity, and fecal coliform levels. Because this irrigation water eventually re-enters a salmon spawning stream, improving irrigation runoff water quality should also improve the stream’s fishery values. This project will serve as a demonstration project for the local farming and ranching community to display the water quality improvement concepts and technology and will be closely monitored to document if the desired water quality improvements actually occur or if modifications are needed. VESTRA prepared the design plans and provided contract bid documents, bidding assistance, and construction oversight for the project. The tailwater pond included the construction of an approximately 13-foot-high dam located within an existing drainage channel. A spillway and outlet pipe were included in the design. VESTRA’s work also included a wetland delineation for the project area and acquiring permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Regional Water Quality Control Board.
