Fish Screen and Passage
Basset Irrigation Ditch
Western Shasta RCD
The Bassett Ditch irrigation ditch on Old Cow Creek includes a concrete flashboard dam structure that prohibits fish passage during the irrigation season. The Western Shasta RCD obtained a grant for a fish screen to provide fish passage. The engineering design was completed by VESTRA and included sizing the screen to accommodate allotted irrigation flows and keep screen velocities within approved limits. A roughened side channel was included in the design to provide fish passage. A detailed topographic survey was done and a base map prepared to generate cross-sections of the channels. HEC-RAS analysis was conducted of low-flow condition to determine low-flow water surface elevation. Permits applications were prepared for the ACOE, CDFG, RWQCB, and the State of California Reclamation Board. The project was completed in 2008.
