Meadow Restoration

Bear Creek Meadow Restoration
1000 Springs Ranch

The Bear Creek Meadow Restoration Project involved the creation of a 2.2-mile design channel along a 500-acre meadow in eastern Shasta County located near the headwaters of Fall River, a renowned blue-ribbon trout fishery. VESTRA staff facilitated approval of the grading permit, which included preparation of a grading and erosion control plan. The design of the new channel, provided by a VESTRA team partner, was based on the historic pattern, dimension, and profile to ensure that flows above bankfull condition spread out over the floodplain to dissipate energy and help trap suspended sediment load. Restoration of a healthy meadow and riparian vegetation is the primary means of ensuring stability of the newly excavated channel. VESTRA staff conducted the final site inspection immediately prior to finalizing the project, which is expected to provide improved fish passage and habitat.
