Shasta West Watershed Assessment

Western Shasta Resource Conservation District

VESTRA was selected to complete the Shasta West Watershed Assessment for the 30,000-acre Shasta West Watershed. This watershed covers diverse areas between Whiskeytown Lake and the Sacramento River. Over half of the watershed is located in the city of Redding. The watershed assessment document dealt with wild land areas to the west, and the urbanization and related issues associated with the city infrastructure, as well as the interface area between the city and the urban residential areas and the western wild lands. Staff worked with an active, opinionated, and intellectually sophisticated watershed group to manage a number of controversial issues in the watershed. The objective of the assessment was to gather and integrate existing information on the watershed’s current and past conditions and use the data as a basis to identify areas in which additional data are needed and ecosystem improvements are required. The watershed assessment contained the same format and elements as the proposed Sierra Valley project.
