Stream and Meadow Restoration

Rose Canyon Creek Stream and Meadow Restoration
Pit River RCD

VESTRA staff assisted the Pit RCD in implementing a stream and meadow restoration project along Rose Canyon Creek, a tributary to the Pit River. Sediment issues on Rose Canyon Creek have a direct effect on habitat values along the Pit River. Several natural events have contributed to the development of a deeply incised channel, including debris flows from a late 1940’s fire and more recently from the 1997 floods. Incisement has resulted in the transition of meadow vegetation to an upland sagebrush community and sediment transport into the Pit River.

The goal of the project was to restore the creek to its original channel, thereby restoring seasonal hydrology (flooding) to the meadow. VESTRA assisted the RCD in obtaining permits for the project and coordinated the construction phase, conducted monitoring, and provided outreach and education to local stakeholders. Other services VESTRA provided included project planning, grant writing, biological surveys, CEQA compliance, preparation of construction bid documents, and contractor solicitation.
