Bulkhead Seal Design and Installation

Golinksy Mine
Shasta County, California

The Golinsky Mine is a  small, underground copper mine complex located on steep, inaccessible Forest Service property near Shasta lake.  The mine includes three abandoned portals, miscellaneous mine workings, and the remnants of a small smelter, all on a steep hillside.  The Forest Service retained VESTRA to review and update historic design plans and specifications for installing two bulkhead seals to control the mine discharge.  Acid rock drainage from the mine enters Little Backbone Creek, a tributary to Shasta Lake, and the Sacramento River.  The review consisted of engineering studies to determine the adequacy of existing plan and hydraulic calculations for seepage around the proposed bulkhead seals.  Because the mine is located in inaccessible terrain, the updated design incorporated construction technology that could be transported by helicopter.  VESTRA staff successfully updated the design plans and specifications, prepared the contract documents, and provided assistance during contractor selection.  VESTRA staff also served as resident inspector during the construction phase of the project.
