NPDES Compliance, Characterization and Remedial Design - Spanish Mine
Spanish Mine
Nevada County, California
VESTRA was retained by the owner of a local timber company to manage its NPDES compliance program, site investigation, and remedial actions at two abandoned mine sites in Nevada County. Acid rock discharge from two portals has been characterized, and a pilot aerobic/anaerobic treatment system was installed in 2009 to determine the design parameters for a full-scale treatment system to address the discharge from one of the portals. A pilot aerobic treatment system will be installed in 2010 to address discharge from the second portal.
The full-scale systems will be installed in 2011, and we anticipate that the treated effluent will be routed to leach fields to avoid discharge to surface water and the associated NPDES permit requirements.
