California Nutrition Network Mapping Application

Over the past four years VESTRA has successfully completed a series of projects for the California Department of Health Services Project California Nutrition Network program, to develop and enhance an interactive Web mapping application. This application was created using ESRI’s ArcIMS and ArcSDE software. California Nutrition Network utilizes the award-winning Internet mapping site to facilitate rapid dissemination of public health and prevention information to communities, non-profit organizations and public health professionals. The locations of health- and nutrition-related service providers can be mapped based on their proximity to Census block groups or other features on the map. The site is used extensively by researchers to conduct health-related demographic studies, and features a number of advanced functions:

  • Generation of custom thematic maps of Census data, including a user-selected classification method, number of classes and color scheme
  • The ability to save the definition of a map as an XML file. This map definition file can be reloaded at a later date, and can be emailed to others so that they are able to reproduce the same map.
  • An query tool that allows users to select features based on particular attributes
  • The ability to create summary lists of features within the current map extent, or within other features (e.g., list all licensed healthcare facilities a ZIP code).

The first project consisted of data updates/additions and minor application enhancements to an existing Map Objects Internet Map Server (MOIMS) application hosted at the Teale Data Center. VESTRA successfully completed this project in 2002. In 2003, VESTRA was contracted to re-design the LEAN GIS website, and to migrate the application to VESTRA ArcIMS technology using ASP.NETVESTRA was recently awarded a follow-on contract to provide data updates and application enhancements.
