Work Management Systems

VESTRA works closely with Azteca Systems, Inc. to bring forth and implement Cityworks Server with state-of-the-art technology, providing agencies an advanced and efficient way to enable staff throughout the enterprise.

VESTRA, along with team members Azteca Systems, Inc. (Sandy, UT) and Oakland Computer Company, were contracted by the Oakland Public Works Agency for the implementation of Cityworks Server MMS, a computerized maintenance management system or CMMS. The project included:

  • Cityworks Server MMS software provided by Azteca Systems, Inc. that integrates and leverages the City’s investment in ESRI-based Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping technology
  • Access to the new system in the field by crew leaders equipped with ruggedized laptops (mounted into trucks) and a secured real-time wireless connection to the main system
  • The development of a public-facing Web site for citizens to submit non-emergency service requests and report problems associated with graffiti, illegal dumping, streets (e.g. potholes, cleaning, bike lanes, crosswalks, medians, guardrails, street lights, traffic signs and signals), sewers, storm drains, sidewalks, litter containers, bicycle parking, trees, parks, trails, and other City-owned property and buildings
  • Integrating an Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) system for locating key equipment and work crews supporting emergency operations
  • An internal Web site that will provide lists of pending high-priority activities, workload volumes, and key performance metrics to City supervisors

The City of Oakland was one of the first in the country to deploy Cityworks Server MMS incorporating ESRI’s ArcGIS Server Web-mapping technology into a full production environment. Until then, the City was using an aging call system along with paper-based log books to track work activities, so the transition to a state-of-the-art system brought major benefits to the City.

To ensure successful implementation of Cityworks Server MMS, VESTRA conducted onsite workshops that often bring different departments together cooperatively to share information and learn how GIS can best serve them. VESTRA created a needs assessment report that showed the best approach to implementing GIS to achieve the organization's goals.

The end result provided a unified approach between departments with maximal ability to share GIS data and information. One of VESTRA's strengths is our ability to assess the needs of a particular organization and recommend a specific mix of GIS services that best meets those needs.
