Bulkhead Seal Design and Installation - Shasta King Mine

Shasta King Mine
Shasta County, California

The Shasta King Mine is an inactive copper mine located in steep, inaccessible terrain in Northern California.  The mine contains five main portals that historically were major contributors of ARD to West Squaw Creek and Shasta Lake.  Two of the main portals were sealed using concrete bulkheads in 1997; however, leakage around the bulkheads continued to result in CWA violations and litigation.  VESTRA was retained by the mine owner, MRRC, to design a secondary seal to be installed adjacent to the existing leaking seal, and to obtain the necessary permits from regulatory agencies to install the bulkhead.
